PROMOTING PEACE THROUGH EDUCATION

In Nepal, we are partnering with a Brazilian based NGO called The Apple of God’s Eyes.

On April 25, 2015, Nepal was violently shaken by a 7.8 earthquake which killed over 9,000 people, destroyed century old temples in Kathmandu, and flattened over a half a million rural homes in this impoverished nation nestled in the Himalayan mountains. While the death toll was far less than that of the Haiti earthquake, the physical damage to houses and livelihoods was more than double Haiti’s earthquake damage.

Eddy Ruble made the connection with Apple of God’s Eyes during his first earthquake relief trip to Nepal. Apple is a well-established Brazilian Christian organization that has been operating in Nepal for 15 years. Their primary focus is to stop human trafficking of children. They provide 1,200 village scholarships to keep children in school; they undertake health initiatives and income generating projects in the remote rural areas so families will not be lured by trafficker’s financial incentives. They also manage 5 children’s homes in Kathmandu with 160 kids rescued from the direst of life circumstances. RIEI has committed to providing university scholarships for 11 students who have completed high school and are graduating out of the children’s home program. These young adults have overcome adversity and unfathomable challenging life stories to find a strength and inner resolve to not just make their way in life, but to work for the betterment of their country and the next generation of children and youth in Nepal. They intrinsically know the value of education. The tuition cost to complete their degrees ranges from $754 - $6600 each, to be paid out over the course of the next 4 years. This is a total investment of $39,000.
